The Day After Christmas 2015

This post begins the first in a series I’ll be writing about our tornado experience.

The day after Christmas. This day is traditionally a pretty laid back day in our household. It’s a day to sleep in, tidy up around the house and mess around with all the new gadgets and goodies everyone got from Santa!

We woke up that morning to an unseasonably warm day. Temps were predicted to be in the mid-70s and the air was thick and heavy with moisture.

The weather forecast predicted storms to roll through so we postponed travel to see some relatives to avoid driving through the storm front.

The day unfurled as expected. Pretty quiet day with the kids playing with their new toys and Don (my husband) doing a little grocery shopping. I stayed in my PJs all day long – don’t get to do that too often!

My husband loves to cook and had found a new fried chicken recipe to make that evening. He was also SO excited to return from the grocery store with a special find. We love Filet Mignon but don’t eat it often due to the price. He had found a whole uncut filet for a steal – $120 and he could slice it into steaks and freeze them for future meals! We don’t typically spend that kind of money on food but decided to splurge! Little did we know within hours our house would lose power for the foreseeable future!

Anywhoo – having grown up in a suburb of Wichita Falls, TX, devastated by a large tornado in 1979, I’ve always been wary and watchful when they are predicted. So as the afternoon progressed I turned on the local news station to stay aware of the alerts.

The boys were both playing video games and my daughter was practicing on the new digital piano we got as a family gift. Don was frying up chicken in the kitchen and I was sorting and organizing paperwork.

As the front rolled through after the 6 o’clock hour, I watched on TV as tornado warnings rolled up through Dallas proper – west of our location. Based on the radar it was going to roll past us, but I have lots of friends and coworkers in that area so I was watching it all raptly.

Sometime around 6:30ish, I hear that there is another ‘area of concern’ and looked up to see the weatherman circle an area South of us, heading our direction. I alerted the family that it was time to just move into our downstairs half bath – it is in the center of the house with no windows, so is our designated safe room. We turned off the electronics in the game room, moved a comforter in the bathroom and the kids gathered in there. I brought our dog, Spike, into the laundry room which is also a secure space.

I’m listening to the TV all the while and hear that there is rotation and a ‘possible tornado’ near I-30 and Bobtown – about 6 miles driving distance from our house. Very close and per the reports, heading our direction.

I went into the bathroom with the kids and hollered at my husband to come on already! He wanted to finish frying up the last batch of chicken! Then we heard a confirmed tornado on the ground at I-30 and the George Bush Turnpike. It was considerably closer! My husband came into the bathroom and we left the door cracked open a few inches to listen to the news. I posted a photo of all of us hunkered down on twitter:

ShelterTweet

We still had the door open to listen to the TV and hear the news anchor say that everyone in the path of the storm should be sheltering and then there was a noise.

My daughter asked, “What is that noise?” and my husband replied, “Sounds like the rain is hitting”.

I looked at my husband, said, “That’s not rain!”, pushed the door closed and continued, “That’s the train! Come here!” and hugged the family tight as the roar of the freight train grew louder.

Stay tuned for the next part of the story

Re-Creating (linkable) Record Name Fields for Custom Use

Requirement: Standardize Opportunity Naming convention using a concatenation of Account Code plus Opportunity Number plus ‘Custom Opp Name’. This will standardize naming conventions across all corporate tools and assist in document searching.

Example:

  • Account: ABC Genius Tech Consulting
  • Account Code: ABCGTC
  • Number of Opportunities: 4 total
  • New Opportunity: Lots of Really Cool Widgets
  • So when this new Opp is created, the new Custom NAME should display:
    • ABCGTC-5-Lots of Really Cool Widgets
      • (and be a clickable link to the Opportunity record)

Caveats:

  • Users still need to be able to edit the Standard Opportunity Name field but we don’t want people editing the abbreviation or number
  • Should replace the Standard Opp Name field in list views and reports with new Concatenated Name
  • New field needs to still be a link to record so users can click through in reports and list views
  • Opportunity Number should be sequential to the Account (Account A has Opps 1,2,3,etc; Account B has Opps 1,2,3,etc.)

Solution:

  1. On Accounts:
    • Create Account Code text field on account records. Set to require unique values. Account_Code__c
    • Load in Account Codes
    • Create Rollup Summary field on account records to Count the Number of Opportunities for Opp Numbering
  2. On Opportunities
    • Create Opportunity Number field OppNum__c
    • Create Process that fires every time an Opportunity is created to take the Count of Opportunities from the related Account, add 1 and stamp the new Opportunity Number field
    • Create formula field to setup your new NAME field
      • Display Text
      • Create your Concatenated Name:
        • Account.Account_Code__c & “” & Text(OppNum__c) & “” & Name
      • Encase the above with the Hyperlink function to display as a link

Replace the Opportunity Name field with your new NAME field in reports and list views. Another cool bonus is the link always opens in a new tab so you don’t lose your place on your report or list view!

With this new field, our Reps can easily update the Opportunity Name as usual, but our Analytics maintain the structure using the Account Code and Numbering System. We made a decision upon turning this on to let all existing Opportunity records show 0 in the new OppNum__c field with new Opportunities showing the actual count. At some point in the future we may go back and number those old opps, but that’s for another day!

Celebrating 100 Blog Posts!

I’ve been blogging since 2009 on this site, but really started posting regularly last year. This blog began as a way to talk about parenting, volunteering, being a working mom, and ADHD. I use a lot of sarcastic wit, humor and always try to speak plainly. The past year I’ve focused mainly on the ‘working mom’ aspect and my role as a Salesforce Administrator. I still weave posts about my kids in, and throw in the occasional parody song or Haiku. This blog is really just a great therapeutic way for me to verbalize what is important in my life. If I make you laugh, awesome! If I help you learn something, fantastic! If I make you think about something you wouldn’t have otherwise, perfect!

Whoomp, there it is! (Translated: Why Salesforce Process Builder Rocks!)

Whoomp

“Why does Salesforce Process Builder rock?” you ask.

Simple: In less than an hour I can create a Custom Object called System Status with 6 fields. Create Status records for all of our major corporate systems (phones, firewall/VPN, programs like WebEx and Office365), and setup a process where our IT group can quickly update records with news of outages or downtime.

System Status Record

With Process Builder I can easily (in minutes) setup a process so when IT Checks a Box to initiate a Company-Wide Notification of the status, a Chatter Post is automatically created in our Corporate Chatter Group (where all 400+ employees have access) with details of the System Status.

System Status Chatter Post

Without Process Builder I would not have been able to create the functionality for the  Chatter Post in minutes. It would have involved apex classes and triggers and debugging (Oh My!) which I am still quite the novice at!

So today I am shouting out my love of Process Builder to the masses! What do you love about the Process Builder?

Whoomp There It Is!

Dreamforce, Hugs and Weird Interweb Created Bonds

CheersMeme

“Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?
Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.”

This was my 4th Dreamforce to attend after 11 years as a Salesforce Admin.

The first year (2012), I remember thinking, “Great conference, lots of stuff for Marketing, Sales, Service and Developers. What about us Admins?”

2013 was all about Salesforce1 and Mobile, with more content for Marketing, Sales, Service and Developers. But again, no specific Admin space or focus.

Then in 2014 I hit the jackpot! An AdminZone – a space just for us and even an unofficial keynote! Last year was a watershed moment for me. I soaked up the AdminZone as much as possible, fangirled at the Meet the MVP event and live-tweeted the Admin Keynote. I met my Nerdforce cohort John at the keynote – we were both SO excited about the focus on Admin Success! Flying back from DF14 I resolved to up my game. I was a seasoned Admin vet and really wanted to step up in the community and do my part to help other admins succeed! I set goals to blog more regularly, assist in the Success Community and maybe even speak at the next Dreamforce.

Flash forward to last week. What an awesome week!

Admin Admin AdminThe AdminLodge was bigger and better than ever! We had an official Keynote and ROCKED the 3rd floor of the Moscone! I spoke not once or twice, but at 6 actual sessions, and even kicked some tail with my Trailhead Gladiators Team, 2 & 1/2 Brits, to win the Grand Championship! I sang in a band on the Dreamboat in front of those same people I fangirled last year! And I was honored to be selected as FinancialForce’s first ever Community Champion at Community Day.

But while those were big wins for me personally, the biggest and most meaningful parts of the conference weren’t those things. It wasn’t the sessions or the announcements or the famous speakers and entertainers.

For me, this year’s conference was ALL ABOUT meeting my family. We don’t have the same DNA, we don’t always speak the same language and some don’t even live on the same continents, but there is one thing we do have in common:

We all bleed Salesforce Blue. (And some of us even had matching nail polish!)

We just ‘get’ each other. We aren’t all admins or developers or MVPs. Just like the misfits that gathered at Cheers every night, we are drawn together because of our passion for all things SAASY!

And this year, amidst the Lightning and Thunder we braved the Trailhead together. Laughing and crying and joking along the way.

Everywhere I went this year I felt like Norm walking into the bar. Someone would shout my name and hugs would ensue. Not the awkward ‘I don’t really know you’ side hugs, but the tight ‘where have you been, I’ve missed you’ hugs that come from deep bonds.

Isn’t is weird and awesome that we’ve formed these bonds virtually?

As I reflect back on DF15, I am grateful to know that I’ve found my tribe. My peeps. My Community.

And to steal a phrase from FinancialForce to describe it, we are most assuredly, Better Together!

“I wanna go where we can see, our troubles are all the same
I wanna go where everybody knows my name.”
