Back to School, Homework Hacks in a Dev Org & Organizing My ADHDer

Well it’s that time of year again.

Time to break the bank school supply shopping, take the boys in for haircuts, try to make bedtime a ‘thing’ again and take my teenager to every store in a 20 mile radius to find the perfect outfits that not everyone will have!BacktoSchool

On Monday the kiddos start back to school. This year will be a banner year. I will have one in elementary school, one in middle school and one in high school. 3 different campuses. 3 different start/end times 3 different sets of activities. I’m sort of panicking about juggling it all!

On the plus side, Dreamforce is just a few weeks away. My mantra over these next few weeks will be, “There’s no place like Dreamforce, there’s no place like Dreamforce!” Do you think if I close my eyes and click my heels someone will whisk me away to San Francisco?

I digress…what was I obsessing about? Oh yeah, how in the aych-eee-double hockey sticks are we going to coordinate it all? Each year, trying to help the kids just keep up with their homework and deadlines gets harder. So I’ve been batting around an idea. Let me know what you think:

The older kids each have a cell phone. They can have them at school to record homework, etc., but we haven’t found a ‘great’ app that is simple for them to use. With TMan’s ADHD, information like assignments are here one minute and gone the next. He really struggles with organization as well. They need the bare minimum – apps with lots of options tend to come across as overwhelming. We need short, sweet and to the point. A place for them to just enter the assignment name and due date.

Here’s where I’ll call out the awesomeness that is Geoff Flynn and his site Exploited Dev Orgs – Geoff does a great job at helping you think outside the box! He wrote a post a few months ago about hacking the traditional Web to Lead form and using the Process Builder to create custom object records through the web to lead process.

So, are you thinking what I am thinking? I bet you are!

I’m thinking if I can create a custom object for ‘Assignments’, then create a simple web-to-lead form to capture assignment name and due date. Pop it on a site and then add a bookmark in each of their phones to the site. At the end of each class they just have to pop open the site and enter the few details. When they get home we can open up my dev org and add more details, organize the assignments by class and more! I could even add reminder notifications to them as well!

What do ya think? Is there some other way you’d do this? Keep in mind, simple is best – nothing complicated or they will likely not use it!
