Ever been asked this question? Haha! Who hasn’t? It’s usually the first question someone asks when introduced to someone new. It’s almost obligatory.
Do you have a pat answer down? An immediate response? Or do you have to think about it each time you are asked? Kind of like when someone asks for your phone number…(sometimes I have to look at my phone to remember it!!)
This question, “So, what do you do?” is incredibly hard for me to answer. I mean how do I pick one thing? There is not a singular answer to this question. No one thing that sums me up so well that I claim it as what I “do”.
For some this is easy – they teach, they go to school, they parent, they photograph, they minister, they work out…they have something that, on the whole, describes them.
I find it SO incredibly hard to choose. (One of the reasons I didn’t finish college either..never could choose a major! I wanted to learn it all!)
Maybe I should create a randomizer app where I can just click the button and one of the things I “do” will pop up each time…a no stress way to socialize!
When I think about the question so many answers swirl around depending on the day! Below are some of them (in no particular order):
I paint
I listen obsessively to audiobooks
I play parent referee to 3 awesome kids
I advocate for ADHD awareness
I avoid housework
I design new Salesforce objects to answer needs at work
I sing Broadway songs very loudly
I volunteer (sometimes too much!)
I crochet
I analyze data and create reports and dashboards
I nag my kids
I tease my husband
I tweet
I worry about stuff
I get excited about workflows and creating efficiencies (that sometimes only I ever notice)
I geek out a lot
I stalk my Tween’s Instagram account
I voice my opinion when I feel someone has been wronged
I (try) to stay out of politics
I don’t ask for help often enough
I let my husband cook (he loves it)
I learn (my favorite past time!)
And these are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head! I am not defined by any one of those alone – it is all of those and more that make me who I am!
See why this seemingly simple question is so hard??
Your turn!! So, what do you do?
